Product Description
Blu-ray Disc Player w/ BD-Live & BonusView. Full HD 1080P Output via HDMI. Netflix Instant streaming ready. DVD 1080p Up-conversion…. More >>

First, it was a September release. That got pushed to October. Circuit City was prepped for release of this product on October 10. That date has come and gone, and no BD-300. Best Buy has no knowledge of it. Amazon still lists no street date. Hell, even Netflix is still saying that they have no idea when this unit is coming out–and they’re the ones that inked this deal!
I got tired of waiting, and decided to buy a new Sony Blu-Ray player this past weekend (it’s amazing, to say the least) and stream Netflix through the New X-Box Experience (NXE), scheduled to release November 19. These constant delays tell me that LG has far too many kinks to work out of this device.

I can’t see any reason for buying this to play netflix – you still need a computer to browse the netflix ‘watch instantly’ selection and add content to your queue – the player does not allow you to add content – only to view what’s already in your queue. So you might as well just watch them on your PC to begin with, especially if your PC already displays through your TV.
As for the Blu Ray player – if you bought this because you’re a netflix user and expected to rent BDs through netflix – you’ll discover they have now added a surcharge to allow you to select Bluray rentals.
My recommendation – don’t be tempted to waste money by the Netflix feature – just find a regular BD player at a better price,

I was going to purchase one of these units, saw it advertised in Rolling Stone and thought “YEAH!”, I can finally bring streaming Netflix to my main HDTV! Then I got on here and read your reviews. How the heck could they build the perfect unit and FORGET to include Wi-Fi??? This seems like a HUGE oversight to me, and but the HALT on my purchase immediately. Major bummer. I know you can add a wi-fi bridge, but there goes another $75 smakeroo’s. DUH! LG should have thought this one out a little better. If your making it for streaming audio, give us the wi-fi connection. That should be a NO BRAINER! Someone here mentioned that wi-fi wouldn’t be a good alternative because it wouldn’t allow for fast enuff streaming, but that’s not true! It is streaming, after all…and if you’ve got a high speed connection, it’s all you need. Damnit, guess I’ll just have to wait until they come out with a wi-fi version, which I would have to think would be coming soon. All is not lost, however, I already have Netflix Streaming Video on my X-Box 360, which is hooked up to the other HDTV in my bedroom. This became available middle of last month (Nov 2008) and I am really enjoying it. It’s wi-fi streaming and it works GREAT! (Not HD quality, but still not bad if there’s a movie you want to see right here, right now!) Guess I’ll just stick to streaming Netflix in the bedroom until the right wi-fi player comes along. You listening, LG?? You screwed up bigtime on this unit. Shame on you!

Bought one, Netflix streaming worked great for a month and then gradually slowed way down and finally completely failed. After 6 phone calls to LG and Nelflix, and a lot of finger pointing between the 2, LG finally told me to send the unit back for repair/replacement. They think firmware (something in the box) failed. Still waiting for a return. Anyway, beware the LG, consider the other options first.

STOP: I wrote this review based mainly on the Watch it Now function on Netflix. I purchased this unit for my sister so she could use that function based on the reviews. It is also the FIRST product that comes up when searching for Watch It Now Netflix on AMazon. So honestly, before you get all butt hurt that I am giving your bluray player a 1 star review remember, this review is for Netflix customers mainly. I don’t care about your cry baby attempts to take validation away from my review, because you can’t, because 100% of what I am saying is true. Netflix Customers take consideration when choosing your platform. Everyone else, you might not find it helpful, but I’m sure Netflix customers will
This product does what it is advertised, but if you actually weigh the options this is by far the worst way to g o about Watch It Now features on your netflix.
Go for the xbox. Seriously. You still get the HD movies thru the xbox in all that purdy hd format that you can get. The xbox, however, can be purchased for $50 less, runs with half the interference, and can hold as much memory as you feel the need to add. Not to mention you get a top of the line gaming system, an unlimited amount of games and movies not available thru Netflix at your fingertips, and soon enough Xbox will be releasing a BluRay player attachment, not unlike the HD DVD attachment they manufactured when the system was first released. Xbox Live adds limitless features that you have no hope of enjoying with the product your looking at right now.
Brand new movies you’d have to wait months, or even years for Netflix to get on the Watch it Now feature, can be downloaded directly from Xbox Live. Special events, like Playing with celebrities, (I.E. Jack Black and Kyle Gas when Rock Band was released, yes, you actually got to sign in, and play live with them via live membership). Countless classic games can be downloaded directly onto hard drives, or memory cards, and they add new ones every day. We’re talking all the way back to Atari, but not limited to strictly old school, newer games can be downloaded as well. They also revamped older games, and turned them into an HD format, so Super Street Fighter now looks as good as any brand new game to come out.
You get a world at your fingertips with Xbox live, and it’s so totally worth it. Not to mention the kids love it. At any given moment hundreds of thousands of people are playing whatever game you want to play online. Also, you can set up your xbox to your computer or laptop to really bring your home theater to full capacity.
Adding more memory to an xbox is as easy as buying a second detachable hard drive, or less expensive memory cards.
It is not without it’s drawbacks. Xbox live costs around $50 for a 13 month membership that you need to do the Netflix. Honestly, small price to pay, especially since that added to the cost of an xbox is still less than this piece of crap unit. Buying the blu ray adapter should run about $150 when it is released. That is well worth it. I’d buy one, but I also have a PS3.
The problem I had with this unit is not that it isn’t good. It’s not that it doesn’t work. It’s just that honestly, for the same price you can get all the bells and whistles that come with a Xbox360, and any informed buyer will quickly realize that they got hosed in a side by side comparison. It just doesn’t hold up. Oh yea, the wireless adapter for my xbox is a whole hell of a lot more reliable than this thing’s, and the Xbox was ten times easier to set up with Netflix than this.
Do yourself a favor and get the Xbox 360. I got this unit for my sister because she didn’t want the xbox. I set it up, played with it for about a week, and returned it and got her the xbox. Even if you never buy a single solitary xbox game, it’s still a much better value.
